    In anticipation of the European Union’s 2024 Parliament elections, Meta Platforms Inc. is enhancing its security measures and transparency tools. This could be a sign of how the Mark Zuckerberg-led company might deal with the US presidential election in November.

    What Happened: As revealed in a blog post on Monday, Meta has been gearing up for the EU Parliament elections by activating a dedicated team to create a customized strategy to maintain the integrity of these elections on their platforms.

    Meta has learned from over 200 global elections since 2016, the Digital Services Act’s regulatory framework, and their commitments in the EU Code of Practice on Disinformation. The company has invested over $20 billion in safety and security since 2016, expanding its global team to around 40,000 people, including 15,000 content reviewers who review content in over 70 languages.

    As the election nears, Meta says it will launch an EU-specific Elections Operations Center to identify potential threats and implement real-time mitigations across their apps and technologies.

    The company is also collaborating with the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) to train fact-checkers across Europe and raise public awareness on how to identify AI-generated and digitally altered media.

    Why It Matters: Meta’s enhanced security measures come in response to criticism over misinformation on its platforms.

    In November, Meta outlined a comprehensive strategy for managing elections on its platforms, recognizing the importance of these events. The company has faced accusations of using “election integrity” as a guise for censorship, notably from Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk.

    With 2024 being a significant election year, Meta announced plans to introduce labels for AI-generated images across its platforms to help users distinguish between human and AI-generated content.
